\"\"<\/a>Today the Sierra Club marked the 40th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the Clean Water Act by releasing a\u00a0Clean Water Voting Record<\/a>\u00a0for the U.S. House of Representatives.\u00a0 The online report card features an interactive map and issues letter grades for U.S. Representatives\u2019 voting records on clean water issues.<\/p>\n

The House has voted to endanger the drinking water sources of 117 million Americans, allow toxic pesticide\u00a0discharges\u00a0into our waterways\u00a0without oversight\u00a0 and halt strong protections for toxic coal ash and destructive mountaintop removal, just to name a few.\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAmericans rely on clean water \u2013 we need it to drink, grow our crops and supply our food.\u00a0 Many of us depend on it for the things we enjoy most \u2013 swimming, boating, hunting and fishing,\u201d said\u00a0Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cFor forty years, the Clean Water Act has helped protect our water.\u00a0 But in the 112th<\/sup>\u00a0Congress, we\u2019ve seen an unprecedented attack from House Leadership on clean water policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sierra Club\u2019s Clean Water Report Card highlights which members of Congress side with Americans who care about clean water and who sides with big polluters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Clean Water Act is one of America\u2019s great success stories,\u201d said\u00a0Brune<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cTake for example, the Cuyahoga River in Ohio, which at one time was one of the most polluted rivers in the nation.\u00a0 The Cuyahoga was so polluted, that it actually caught on fire multiple times in the late 1960s.\u00a0 Since the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, the Cuyahoga \u2013 once devoid of fish \u2013 now supports 44 species and is recognized as an American Heritage river.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we should celebrate that success and move forward to build on that progress to ensure that our children and our children\u2019s children will have safe, clean water.\u201d<\/p>\n
