Photo \u00a9 2013 John Blair.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/topic\/air-pollution\/\">Air pollution<\/a>\u00a0is not only causing long-term damage to the planet and human health, but it is already killing millions of people worldwide. In an editorial published November 14, 2016 in\u00a0<em>STAT<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/david-hunter\/\">David Hunter<\/a>, Vincent L. Gregory Professor in Cancer Prevention at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/francesca-dominici\/\">Francesca Dominici<\/a>, professor of biostatistics and senior associate dean for research, call for actions that would mitigate climate change in the future\u2014and alleviate the immediate health burdens from air pollution.<a href=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gas-mask.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2910\" src=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gas-mask.jpg\" alt=\"gas mask\" width=\"157\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One in eight deaths worldwide each year is linked to air pollution, according to the World Health Organization. This translates to approximately 7 million people\u2014far more than the number of deaths due to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/topic\/hivaids\/\">HIV\/AIDS<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/topic\/tuberculosis\/\">tuberculosis<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/topic\/malaria\/\">malaria<\/a>\u00a0combined. In addition, air pollution contributes to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/topic\/chronic-disease\/\">disabling conditions<\/a>\u00a0in millions of people including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and heart disease and stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Cutting back on burning fossil fuels and biomass would have immediate health benefits, and also meet climate change mitigation goals, the authors wrote.
