{"id":4559,"date":"2018-08-28T09:03:01","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T15:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/?p=4559"},"modified":"2018-08-28T09:03:01","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T15:03:01","slug":"air-pollution-causes-huge-reduction-in-intelligence-study-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/?p=4559","title":{"rendered":"Air pollution causes \u2018huge\u2019 reduction in intelligence, study reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>August 28, 2108 &#8211; by Damian Carrington and Lily Kuo in the <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ehn.us16.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=73be43273a8ebb733ab2696c7&amp;id=31922b7553&amp;e=2b95325894\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Guardian<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Impact of high levels of toxic air \u2018is equivalent to having lost a year of education\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/air-pollution\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Air pollution<\/a> causes a \u201chuge\u201d reduction in intelligence, according to new research, indicating that the damage to society of toxic air is far deeper than the well-known impacts on physical health.<a href=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-13-at-11.10.16-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3597\" src=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-13-at-11.10.16-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1004\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-13-at-11.10.16-AM.png 1004w, http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-13-at-11.10.16-AM-300x105.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1004px) 100vw, 1004px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The research was conducted in China but is relevant across the world, with <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/apr\/17\/more-than-95-of-worlds-population-breathe-dangerous-air-major-study-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">95% of the <\/a><a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/apr\/17\/more-than-95-of-worlds-population-breathe-dangerous-air-major-study-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">global population breathing<\/a><a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/apr\/17\/more-than-95-of-worlds-population-breathe-dangerous-air-major-study-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> unsafe air<\/a>. It found that high pollution levels led to significant drops in test scores in language and arithmetic, with the average impact equivalent to having lost a year of the person\u2019s education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPolluted air can cause everyone to reduce their level of education by one year, which is huge,\u201d said Xi Chen at Yale School of Public <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/health\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Health<\/a> in the US, a member of the research team. \u201cBut we know the effect is worse for the elderly, especially those over 64, and for men, and for those with low education. If we calculate [the loss] for those, it may be a few years of education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Previous research has found that air pollution harms cognitive performance in students, but this is the first to examine people of all ages and the difference between men and women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The damage in intelligence was worst for those over 64 years old, with serious consequences, said Chen: \u201cWe usually make the most critical financial decisions in old age.\u201d Rebecca Daniels, from the UK public health charity Medact, said: \u201cThis report\u2019s findings are extremely worrying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Air pollution causes seven million premature deaths a year but the harm to people\u2019s mental abilities is less well known. A recent study found toxic air was linked to <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/jan\/26\/air-pollution-linked-to-extremely-high-mortality-in-people-with-mental-disorders\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cextremely high mortality\u201d in people with mental disorders<\/a>and earlier work linked it to <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/jun\/13\/air-pollution-linked-to-increased-mental-illness-in-children\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">increased mental illness in children<\/a>, while another analysis found those <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2017\/jan\/04\/living-near-heavy-traffic-increases-dementia-risk-say-scientists\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">living near busy roads had an increased risk of dementia<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The new work, published in the journal <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/cgi\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1809474115\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a>, analysed language and arithmetic tests conducted as part of the China Family Panel Studies on 20,000 people across the nation between 2010 and 2014. The scientists compared the test results with records of nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They found the longer people were exposed to dirty air, the bigger the damage to intelligence, with language ability more harmed than mathematical ability and men more harmed than women. The researchers said this may result from differences in how <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/neurophilosophy\/2013\/oct\/06\/male-brain-versus-female-brain\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">male and female brains work<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Derrick Ho, at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said the impact of air pollution on cognition was important and his group had similar preliminary findings in their work. \u201cIt is because high air pollution can potentially be associated with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration of humans,\u201d he said.<a href=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Mercury-on-the-Brain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2195 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Mercury-on-the-Brain.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"548\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Mercury-on-the-Brain.jpg 548w, http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Mercury-on-the-Brain-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chen said air pollution was most likely to be the cause of the loss of intelligence, rather than simply being a correlation. The study followed the same individuals as air pollution varied from one year to the next, meaning that many other possible causal factors such as genetic differences are automatically accounted for.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The scientists also accounted for the gradual decline in cognition seen as people age and ruled out people being more impatient or uncooperative during tests when pollution was high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Air pollution was seen to have a short-term impact on intelligence as well and Chen said this could have important consequences, for example for students who have to take crucial entrance exams on polluted days.<a href=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/air-pollution-alert-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2875\" src=\"http:\/\/valleywatch.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/air-pollution-alert-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBut there is no shortcut to solve this issue,\u201d he said. \u201cGovernments really need to take concrete measures to reduce air pollution. That may benefit human capital, which is one of the most important driving forces of economic growth.\u201d In <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/china\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">China<\/a>, air pollution is declining but remains three times above World Health Organisation (WHO) limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the WHO, 20 of the world\u2019s most polluted cities are in developing countries. China, home to several of those cities, has been engaged in a \u201c<a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/mar\/05\/china-pollution-economic-reform-growth-target\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">war against pollution<\/a>\u201d for the past five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The results would apply around the world, Chen added. The damage to intelligence was likely to be incremental, he said, with a 1mg rise in pollution over three years equivalent to losing more than a month of education. Small pollution particles are known to be especially damaging. \u201cThat is the same wherever you live. As human beings we have more in common than is different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aarash Saleh, a registrar in respiratory medicine in the UK and part of the <a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medact.org\/project\/doctors-against-diesel\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Doctors Against Diesel<\/a> campaign, said: \u201cThis study adds to the concerning bank of evidence showing that exposure to air pollution can worsen our cognitive function. Road traffic is the biggest contributor to air pollution in residential areas and the government needs to act urgently to remove heavily-polluting vehicles from our roads.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Daniels said: \u201cThe UK\u2019s air is illegally polluted and is harming people\u2019s health every day.
