costly and\/or failed efforts at Duke\u2019s Edwardsport, NRG\u2019s Petra Nova, SaskPower\u2019s Boundary Dam, and Southern Co.\u2019s Kemper plant; technology seen as unworkable and too expensive for fast-changing electricity-generation markets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Holy-Grail-of-Carbon-Capture-Continues-to-Elude-Coal-Industry_November-2018.pdf\">study published today<\/a> by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis concludes that costly efforts undertaken in North America to develop workable, economic technology to capture carbon from coal-fired generation have come up short<a href=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/print-9\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-26752\" src=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-16-IEEFA-CCS-map-360-x-216-500x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-16-IEEFA-CCS-map-360-x-216-500x300.jpg 500w, http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-16-IEEFA-CCS-map-360-x-216-768x461.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-16-IEEFA-CCS-map-360-x-216-300x180.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-16-IEEFA-CCS-map-360-x-216.jpg 900w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Further, the study concludes that technology developments in the renewable energy and natural gas sectors have obviated the need for continued efforts to retrofit carbon capture technology on the nation\u2019s shrinking coal fleet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The report\u2014 <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Holy-Grail-of-Carbon-Capture-Continues-to-Elude-Coal-Industry_November-2018.pdf\">\u201cHoly Grail of Carbon Capture Continues to Elude Coal Industry\u201d<\/a>\u2014tracks the history and performance of four highly touted projects: Saskatchewan Power\u2019s Boundary Dam Power Station in Canada, NRG\u2019s Petra Nova project in Texas, Southern Co.\u2019s Kemper plant in Mississippi, and Duke Energy\u2019s Edwardsport plant in Indiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhat all four of these projects have in common is their dismal performance,\u201d said David Schlissel, IEEFA\u2019s director of resource planning development and lead author of the report. \u201cWhile Petra Nova and Boundary Dam are both operational, neither in truth can be considered anything other than demonstration units, the integrated gasification combined cycle project at Edwardsport has performed abysmally, and the Kemper clean coal project was essentially abandoned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While the report focuses on North American initiatives, it speaks as well to long-standing U.S. coal industry plans to sell carbon-capture technology abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/2018-11-13-coal-ccs-vs-wind-and-solar-v3-web-342x315\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26753\" src=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-13-Coal-CCS-vs-wind-and-solar-v3-web-342x315-326x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-13-Coal-CCS-vs-wind-and-solar-v3-web-342x315-326x300.jpg 326w, http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-13-Coal-CCS-vs-wind-and-solar-v3-web-342x315-768x708.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-11-13-Coal-CCS-vs-wind-and-solar-v3-web-342x315.jpg 855w\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u201cOur findings serve as a cautionary tale for any country considering broad adoption of CCS for coal,\u201d Schlissel said. \u201cThe technology remains unproven at full commercial scale, it is wildly expensive, there are serious questions regarding after-capture transport, injection and storage of the captured CO2 and\u2014most important\u2014more reliable and far cheaper power-generation options exist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Holy-Grail-of-Carbon-Capture-Continues-to-Elude-Coal-Industry_November-2018.pdf\">The report<\/a> traces a legacy of costly experimentation that began over a decade ago under the direction of the U.S. Department of Energy, which began in the early 2000s to seek ways to capture coal-generated carbon emissions to address climate change. American electricity markets relied on coal for more than 50 percent of power generation nationally at the time, a figure that has dropped to less than 30 percent and is continuing to shrink as natural gas and renewables gain market share.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cElectricity produced by renewable energy, particularly wind and solar, amounted to little more than a rounding error in the Energy Information Administration\u2019s 2003 edition of its Annual Energy Review,\u201d the report notes. \u201cToday they account for more than 10% of the nation\u2019s electricity generation, and both continue to gain market share fast.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meanwhile, technology-driven advances in natural gas production have given the energy sector a huge lift: \u201cSupplies have soared and costs have been cut to the point that gas is now the only viable option for developers looking to build new fossil-fuel generation.
